A story of a morning adventure set in woods in north Norfolk has won first prize in a creative writing competition for Adam Burton, 14, of Old Catton in Norwich.

The short work, called ‘Adventures of Kelling Heath’, describes a spooky encounter with what turns out to be a friendly dog on a dewy Spring morning and was inspired by a family holiday at Kelling Heath Holiday Park, which organised the competition in conjunction with the Voewood Literary Festival.

“We were on holiday and had enjoyed walking in the woods so I thought I’d have a go at the competition. I’ve always enjoyed story writing and carry a notebook around with me, but it was a surprise to win,” said Adam. Adam wins a family break at Kelling Heath Holiday Park, a family pass to the Voewood Festival and £50 worth of books from The Book Hive in Norwich. Other winners were 5 year old Lennon Edwards from Bishop’s Stortford and Alexander Aguera Castilla, 9, of Melton Mowbray, who each receive a bundle of books worth £50 and a goody bag.

Clare Conville, reknowed literary agent and one of the judges, said it had been difficult to select the winners as the entries were so varied and covered everything from talking palm trees to forest islands and descriptive pieces about bats, snakes and squirrels.

”Adam’s story was evocative of an early morning walk in woods and captured the excitement and apprehension of being alone in an unfamiliar place. It also had a twist at the end, which is a good technique in short story writing.”

Michael Timewell, director of Blue Sky Leisure which owns Kelling Heath Holiday Park, said he decided to run the competition as the Park receives many stories, poems and drawings from children who have enjoyed holidays over the years.

“With the Voewood Literary Festival taking place almost on our doorstep we thought it was a good opportunity to celebrate all the young budding writers that get inspired by the unique location and habitat of Kelling Heath.

“We’ve been really pleased by the response this year and hope the competition will become an annual event.”
